Montana First Class crane/hoisting operator license authorizes operation of all crane classes — the broadest Montana credential. Sub-types within the First Class include First-Class Crane Hoisting, First-Class Crane Hydraulic, First-Class Tower Crane, and First-Class Gantry and Trolley. Legal basis
It is unlawful for a person to operate any crane and hoist equipment used in hoisting or lowering personnel or material that has a manufacturer's rating of more than 6 tons without first obtaining a license from the department.
Eligibility
Applicants must have no less than one year of experience in the operation of crane hoist equipment covered by the rule, at a minimum of 1,000 hours per year. Applicants must pass a physical examination within 180 days prior to a new application and pass both written and practical examinations as prescribed by the bureau. Passing score is 75% or higher.
Fees
Application via state exam: $100. Application via national certification recognition: $80. Renewal: $150 for First or Second Class.
National certification recognition
The department shall issue a First-Class or Second-Class crane and hoist engineer's license to any individual certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO), or any other similar certifying organization that has been approved by the department as having qualifications at least substantially equivalent to the requirements of this state. Recognized programs cited by the program include NCCCO, CIC, OECP, NCCER, and EICA.

Renewal
Licenses expire one year from issuance. Editor verification required for current CE requirements (the program does not appear to impose state-level CE beyond the recertification cycle of the recognized national certifying organization).
