TX Vehicle Inspector License (Commercial / Salvage / Designated Vehicles)
Texas Department of Public Safety — Vehicle InspectionScope of Work
Texas DPS issues the Vehicle Inspector License to individuals who perform inspections at TX-licensed inspection stations. Effective January 1, 2025, Texas eliminated the annual passenger-vehicle safety inspection requirement (HB 3297). Mandatory state inspection is retained for: commercial motor vehicles, salvage / rebuilt salvage vehicles, and certain designated cases (e.g., teen-driver vehicles in some applications). The inspector credential remains required for any individual performing those inspections. Note on Scope
Texas does not license individual general repair mechanics. The Vehicle Inspector License authorizes only commercial / salvage / designated-category state inspections after the January 2025 reform. Technicians performing routine repair work or passenger-vehicle work in Texas without conducting state inspections do not need this credential.
