Scope

North Dakota licenses electricians at the state level through the North Dakota State Electrical Board (NDSEB) under North Dakota Century Code (NDCC) Chapter 43-09 (Electricians). NDSEB issues Apprentice, Class B Journeyman, Class A Master, and Electrical Contractor licenses. Source: NDSEB (https://www.ndseb.com/) and NDSEB Licensing (https://www.ndseb.com/licensing/).

Experience

A Class B Journeyman Electrician applicant must document 8,000 hours (approximately four years) of practical electrical experience as a registered apprentice under the supervision of a licensed North Dakota Class A Master or Class B Journeyman Electrician. Hours are counted through NDSEB apprentice registration. Source: NDCC 43-09-08.

Education

Applicants must complete the classroom instruction in electrical theory and code required by NDSEB's apprentice program, typically delivered through IEC Dakotas, the IBEW-NECA JATC, or a North Dakota-approved post-secondary program such as North Dakota State College of Science.

Exam

Administered by NDSEB or a contracted vendor listed on the NDSEB licensing page. The exam is based on the National Electrical Code edition currently adopted by North Dakota, plus North Dakota-specific law and rule under North Dakota Administrative Code (NDAC) Title 20 (State Electrical Board). Verify current passing score and exam fees on the NDSEB licensing page before applying.

Reciprocity

North Dakota has electrical reciprocity agreements with several neighboring states under NDCC 43-09-16 and NDSEB rule. Historical reciprocal states have included Minnesota, Montana, South Dakota, Wyoming, and others, subject to current NDSEB policy and equivalent licensing. Verify the current reciprocity list on the NDSEB licensing page before relying.

Renewal and CE

North Dakota electrician licenses renew annually under NDCC 43-09-12. Journeyman and Master Electricians must complete 16 hours of NDSEB-approved continuing education every three years, including a National Electrical Code update course, per NDAC Title 20. Verify the current CE structure on the NDSEB Continuing Education page (https://www.ndseb.com/continuing-education/) before each renewal.

Background Check

NDSEB may require background checks for new applicants under board rule.

Scope Limits

A Class B Journeyman Electrician performs installation, maintenance, and repair under the supervision of a Class A Master Electrician. The journeyman cannot pull permits in the journeyman's own name; permits are pulled by a licensed Electrical Contractor with a Class A Master of record.

Accepts from: minnesota, montana, south-dakota, wyoming
