Scope of Work

A Nebraska Journeyman Electrician is authorized to install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment and to supervise apprentice electricians, while employed by a licensed electrical contractor. The journeyman license is an individual credential; the firm must hold an Electrical Contractor license for contracting and permitting. Experience and Training

An applicant must have at least four years (approximately 8,000 hours) of qualifying experience in the electrical industry, typically acquired through an electrical apprenticeship. Education credit may reduce the experience requirement: a two-year associate's degree in electrical technology from an accredited program counts as one year of experience. Verified military electrical experience may also count. Authority: Nebraska Revised Statutes Chapter 81, Article 21 (State Electrical Act) and implementing State Electrical Board rules. Exam

The State Electrical Division administers the Nebraska Journeyman Electrician exam as an 80-question multiple-choice, open-book, computer-based examination with a 240-minute time limit. Content covers the edition of the National Electrical Code adopted by Nebraska, Nebraska statutes and State Electrical Board rules, electrical theory, calculations, grounding and bonding, overcurrent protection, and services. Military Crosswalk

Nebraska statute and State Electrical Board policy allow work-experience credit for qualified electrical experience gained in military service. Applicants submit DD-214 plus training transcripts with the application. Source: Nebraska State Electrical Division — Journeyman Electrician (https://electrical.nebraska.gov/journeyman-electrician).

Renewal and Continuing Education

The Journeyman Electrician license is issued on a 2-year renewal cycle, expiring December 31 of the renewal year. The renewal fee is $25. The State Electrical Division requires at least 12 contact hours of approved continuing education per renewal term, with at least 6 of those hours on the National Electrical Code. Reciprocity

Nebraska maintains a Journeyman Electrician reciprocity agreement with Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Minnesota, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. Eligible applicants from those states may receive the Nebraska journeyman license by endorsement upon proof of a comparable active license and payment of fees. Verify current reciprocity status before filing, since the list is periodically updated.
