INDIANA · electrician
Not regulated at state level (municipal licensing)
City and county authorities (no statewide electrical license) →Scope and Structure
Indiana does not issue a statewide electrician or electrical contractor license. The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency (PLA) licenses plumbers statewide but defers electrical licensing entirely to cities, counties, and towns. Electrical contractors and individual electricians are licensed under municipal ordinances that vary in experience requirements, exam content, bond and insurance terms, and renewal cycles.
Typical City Licensing Pattern
Indiana cities that maintain electrical licenses generally require an applicant to document several years of electrical experience (often 4 years for a journeyman and 6 or more years for an electrical contractor), pass a city-administered or third-party-administered exam on the NEC edition adopted by Indiana, provide proof of liability insurance, and post a local bond. Fees, bond amounts, and code adoptions vary by jurisdiction.
Largest Jurisdictions (representative, not exhaustive).
- Indianapolis / Marion County. The City of Indianapolis Business and Neighborhood Services office administers electrical contractor registration with its own examination, bond, and insurance requirements. - Fort Wayne. The City of Fort Wayne Community Development Division maintains electrical contractor registration. - Evansville, South Bend, Gary, Hammond. Each maintains its own electrical licensing ordinance. - Many smaller cities and counties either register electrical contractors themselves or recognize a qualifying nearby jurisdiction's license.
Indiana Electrical Code
Indiana adopts and amends the National Electrical Code through the Indiana Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission under Indiana Code Title 22, Article 13. Local jurisdictions enforce the code through their permitting and inspection functions. Confirm the current NEC edition in force with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security Division of Fire and Building Safety before estimating work. Low Voltage and Fire Alarm
Certain specialty work (for example, alarm system installation) is licensed separately in Indiana under various state or local regimes; check the specific rule for the specialty.
What to Expect
An electrician building an Indiana business should plan to (1) qualify and test under each city or county where you will work, (2) carry liability insurance and post local bonds as each ordinance requires, (3) form and register the business entity with the Indiana Secretary of State via INBiz, and (4) register tax and employer accounts with the Indiana Department of Revenue and the Department of Workforce Development. Verify every municipal requirement against the current ordinance before estimating or permitting.
