Scope of Work

A New Hampshire Journeyman Electrician is authorized to install, alter, and repair electrical wiring under the direction of a licensed Master Electrician. The credential does not authorize contracting for electrical work in the Journeyman's own name; that requires the shop to employ or be owned by a Master Electrician of record. The Electricians' Board, within the New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification (OPLC), administers the license under RSA 319-C. Experience and Training

8,000 hours of on-the-job training as a registered apprentice under supervision of a New Hampshire-licensed Master, plus a minimum of 600 hours of related classroom instruction (150 hours per calendar year for 4 years). Apprentice registration with the Electricians' Board is a prerequisite to counting hours toward Journeyman. Exam

Administered by the Board's designated exam provider. Content covers the National Electrical Code edition currently adopted in New Hampshire, RSA 319-C, and Board rules at Elec 100 through Elec 600. Review the current Candidate Information Bulletin before scheduling. Source: New Hampshire OPLC Electricians' Board (https://www.oplc.nh.gov/electricians-board).

Reciprocity

New Hampshire maintains reciprocal licensure arrangements with a limited set of states for Journeyman and Master credentials obtained by examination. Applicants who earned their license through reciprocity in the originating state are typically not eligible for New Hampshire reciprocity. Applicants should submit a license-verification letter from the originating board and confirm current terms with OPLC. Renewal and CE

3-year renewal cycle. Each code cycle the licensee must complete 15 hours of instruction on changes to the latest published edition of NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code, as adopted in New Hampshire. The 15-hour NEC update is a Board-published condition of renewal for Journeyman and Master licenses. Renewal is processed through OPLC's online portal. Union and Non-Union Pathway

New Hampshire apprenticeships are registered through the State Apprenticeship Agency and the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship. Options include IBEW Local 490 (Concord/Manchester area) joint apprenticeship with NECA, and non-union programs registered with ABC New Hampshire and IEC of New England. Community-college pathways through Manchester Community College and NHTI Concord's Community College provide the related-instruction hours. Presented neutrally; verify current intake with each program.

Scope Limitations

A Journeyman may not contract for electrical work in the Journeyman's own name, pull electrical permits as the responsible party, or supervise electricians outside the employer's Master of record. A Master Electrician license is required to contract, permit, and supervise independently in New Hampshire.
