Scope of Work

An Iowa Class A Journeyman Electrician has the qualifications, training, experience, and technical knowledge to wire for or install electrical wiring, apparatus, and equipment, and to supervise apprentices and unclassified persons. The journeyman license is an individual credential and does not by itself authorize contracting in the licensee's name; contracting requires the firm to hold an Iowa Electrical Contractor license (Class A, B, or C) with a qualified licensee of record. Experience and Training

An applicant for a Class A Journeyman license must have successfully completed an apprenticeship training program registered with the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship. A registered apprenticeship is 8,000 hours (approximately 4 years) of on-the-job training as an apprentice under a licensed electrical contractor plus 576 hours of related classroom instruction in electrical theory and safety. Authority: Iowa Code Chapter 103 and Iowa Administrative Code Chapter 661-502. Exam

The Iowa Electrical Examining Board administers the journeyman examination. Content covers the edition of the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) currently adopted by Iowa, Iowa Code Chapter 103, Iowa Administrative Code Chapter 661 (Electrical Examining Board rules), electrical theory, calculations, and installation practices. A passing score is required before the license is issued. Source: Iowa DIAL Electrical Licensing (https://dial.iowa.gov/licenses/building/electrical-licensing).

Military Crosswalk

Iowa Code Chapter 272C includes provisions for awarding licensure credit to qualifying military-trained applicants. Documented military electrical training and experience is evaluated against the journeyman requirements on a case-by-case basis. Applicants submit DD-214 plus training transcripts with the DIAL application.

Renewal and Continuing Education

The Iowa Class A Journeyman license is issued on a 3-year renewal cycle. The Electrical Examining Board requires approved continuing education each cycle; current requirements and approved providers are listed on the DIAL site. Failure to complete CE and renew on time can cause the license to lapse. Source: Iowa DIAL Electrical Licensing (https://dial.iowa.gov/licenses/building/electrical-licensing).

Reciprocity

Iowa offers reciprocity or endorsement to journeyman applicants from several states that maintain comparable examination and experience standards, including Nebraska and others on the current DIAL list. Verify current reciprocity status with DIAL before filing. Source: Iowa DIAL Electrical Licensing (https://dial.iowa.gov/licenses/building/electrical-licensing).

Pathway to Master

To qualify for the Iowa Master Electrician license an applicant must be a licensed Journeyman for at least one year and pass the Master exam administered by the Iowa Electrical Examining Board. The Master credential is what permits designation as the qualifying licensee on a Class A Electrical Contractor license. Source: Iowa Electrical Examining Board (https://iowaelectrical.gov/).
