Scope of Work

A Connecticut E-2 Unlimited Electrical Journeyperson is authorized to perform electrical work under a licensed E-1 Electrical Contractor. The Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (DCP), Occupational and Professional Licensing Division, lists 10 electrical license types. The E-1 is the unlimited contractor; the E-2 is the unlimited journeyperson. Other classes (L-5/L-6 low-voltage, T-1/T-2 telecommunications, C-5/C-6 electronics) cover narrower scopes. Experience and Training

Standard pathway: completion of a registered apprenticeship totaling 8,000 hours of on-the-job training (4 years) and 720 hours of related classroom instruction (180 per year, or 144 per year depending on the specific program), under supervision of a Connecticut-licensed E-1 Electrical Contractor. Apprentice registration through the Connecticut Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship Training is a prerequisite. Exam

Administered by PSI Services. The E-2 exam covers the National Electrical Code edition currently adopted in Connecticut, Connecticut electrical statutes (C.G.S. Chapter 393), and Connecticut DCP rules. A passing score is 70%. Renewal and CE

1-year renewal cycle. E-1 and E-2 licensees must complete Board-approved continuing education annually as a condition of renewal; the Electrical Work Examining Board publishes current CE hour and topic rules. Verify current CE hours on the DCP page before renewal. Source: Connecticut DCP Electrical License (https://portal.ct.gov/dcp/license-services-division/all-license-applications/electrical-license).

Reciprocity

Connecticut maintains limited reciprocal arrangements with specific states for E-1 and E-2 licenses obtained by examination. Applicants licensed in another state should submit a license-verification letter and apply through the Connecticut DCP Equivalent Out-of-State License path. Union and Non-Union Pathway

Connecticut apprenticeship is registered through the DOL Office of Apprenticeship Training. IBEW Local 35 (Hartford), Local 90 (New Haven/Wallingford), and Local 488 (Fairfield County) operate joint apprenticeships with NECA; non-union pathways run through ABC Connecticut and IEC of New England programs. Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) runs high-school and adult electrical programs at trade high schools across the state. Presented neutrally; verify current intake with each program.

E-1 Upgrade

To upgrade from E-2 to E-1, a Connecticut electrician must hold the E-2 for at least 2 years (or have at least 6 years of equivalent experience and training) and pass the E-1 exam. The E-1 is the credential required to contract for electrical work and pull permits.
