Experience and training

A Journeyman Plumber applicant must have 2 years of current work experience to qualify for the exam. A Master Plumber applicant must have held a Journeyman Plumber certification for a minimum of one year before sitting for the Master exam. Exam

As of January 1, 2026, all Master-level applicants must complete both the plumbing and/or gas fitting exam AND a Business and Law exam. Effective January 1, 2023, applicants test on the 2021 International Plumbing Code or the 2021 International Fuel Gas Code. Renewal and CE

Beginning January 1, 2025, continuing education is required for all Journeyman and Master certificate holders who do not qualify for an age exemption. Licensees must obtain 4 hours of CE to renew, regardless of the number of certifications held. Licensees holding both plumbing and gas certifications must obtain 2 hours of plumbing CE and 2 hours of gas CE. Licensees over age 65 are not required to complete CE.
