Scope of Work

A Connecticut P-2 Unlimited Plumbing Journeyperson is authorized to perform plumbing and piping work under a licensed P-1 Unlimited Plumbing Contractor. Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection lists P-1 (contractor), P-2 (journeyperson), P-3 (limited contractor), and P-4 (limited journeyperson) in the plumbing category, along with related gas and pipefitting credentials. Experience and Training

Standard pathway: completion of a registered apprenticeship with 576 classroom hours and 8,000 hours (4 years) of on-the-job training under supervision of a Connecticut-licensed P-1 Plumbing Contractor. Apprentice registration through the Connecticut Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship Training is a prerequisite. For the Equivalent Experience and Training path, applicants submit employer affidavits documenting qualifying hours. Exam

Administered by PSI Services. Content covers the State of Connecticut Plumbing Code (based on the IPC with Connecticut amendments), C.G.S. Chapter 393, and Connecticut DCP rules. A passing score is 70%. Source: Connecticut DCP Plumbing License (https://portal.ct.gov/dcp/license-services-division/all-license-applications/plumbing-license).

Renewal and CE

1-year renewal cycle. P-1 and P-2 licensees must complete Board-approved continuing education annually; the Plumbing and Piping Work Examining Board publishes current CE hour rules. Verify current hours on the DCP page before renewal. Reciprocity

Connecticut reviews reciprocal licensing on a case-by-case basis. Applicants licensed in another state should submit a license-verification letter and apply through the Plumbing Contractor Equivalent Out-of-State License path or the Journeyperson Equivalent Experience and Training path. For out-of-state licenses to count for the P-1, the originating state's license must have required 720 classroom hours and 12,000 hours of on-the-job training. Union and Non-Union Pathway

Connecticut plumbing apprenticeships run through UA-affiliated Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 676 (southern Connecticut) and Local 777 (statewide), and non-union programs registered with PHCC of Connecticut. CTECS trade high schools run adult plumbing programs statewide. Presented neutrally; verify current intake with each program.

P-1 Upgrade

To upgrade from P-2 to P-1, a Connecticut plumber must hold the P-2 for at least 2 years (or have at least 6 years of equivalent experience and training) and pass the P-1 exam. The P-1 is the credential required to contract for plumbing work and pull permits.
