Journeyman Plumber
Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) →Scope
Utah licenses plumbers at the state level through the Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) under Utah Code Title 58 Chapter 55 (Construction Trades Licensing Act). DOPL issues Apprentice, Residential Journeyman, Journeyman, Residential Master, and Master plumber licenses, plus firm-level plumbing contractor licenses (P200 Plumbing Contractor, S210 Residential Plumbing Contractor). Experience
A Journeyman Plumber applicant must document 8,000 hours (approximately four years) of practical plumbing experience as a registered apprentice under the supervision of a Utah Journeyman or Master plumber. Hours are counted through DOPL's registered apprentice program or an equivalent out-of-state registered program. Source: DOPL Plumbing (https://dopl.utah.gov/plumbing/).
Education
Applicants must complete classroom instruction in plumbing theory, code, and safety, typically delivered through a Utah-approved apprenticeship program (PHCC Utah, UA Local 140 JATC, or Utah System of Higher Education programs). The classroom component runs alongside the on-the-job hours.
Exam
DOPL contracts with Prometric for the Utah Journeyman Plumber exam. The exam is based on the plumbing-code edition currently adopted by Utah (per the DOPL-published code), plus Utah-specific law and rule under Utah Administrative Code R156-55c. Verify current exam fees and the Candidate Information Bulletin on the Prometric Utah plumbing page.
Reciprocity
Utah evaluates out-of-state journeyman credentials on an endorsement basis under Utah Code 58-1-302. Licensees from states with substantially equivalent requirements may qualify for endorsement subject to DOPL review and a Utah law-and-rule exam. Confirm current endorsement posture on the DOPL Plumbing page.
Renewal and CE
Utah plumber licenses renew biennially under Utah Code 58-55-303. Licensees must complete continuing-education hours each renewal, including code-update instruction. Verify the current CE hour count and approved providers on DOPL's Plumbing CE page before renewal.
Background Check
DOPL may require fingerprint-based criminal-history checks for new applicants under Utah Code 58-1-301 et seq.
Scope Limits
A Journeyman Plumber performs installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems under the supervision of a Master Plumber. The journeyman cannot pull permits in the journeyman's own name; permits are pulled by a licensed plumbing contractor (P200 / S210). Residential Journeyman scope is limited to one- and two-family dwellings.
