Scope of Work

A Connecticut S-2 Unlimited Heating, Piping and Cooling Journeyperson is authorized to perform heating, piping, and cooling work (including hydronic, steam, and forced-air heating, and refrigeration and air-conditioning work) under a licensed S-1 Unlimited Heating, Piping and Cooling Contractor. The Heating, Piping, Cooling and Sheet Metal Work Examining Board administers approximately 20 distinct license types at the contractor (1) and journeyperson (2) level under the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. License shorthand: S-1/S-2 (unlimited heating, piping, cooling); D-1/D-2 (limited domestic heating and cooling); B-1/B-2 (heating and cooling); G-1/G-2 (sheet metal); and others. Experience and Training

Standard pathway to S-2: completion of a registered apprenticeship covering unlimited heating, piping, and cooling work, typically 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and 720 hours of related classroom instruction under supervision of a Connecticut-licensed S-1. Apprentice registration through the Connecticut Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship Training is a prerequisite. EPA 608 (Federal). Under 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F, technicians who maintain, service, repair, or dispose of equipment that could release ozone-depleting refrigerants or their substitutes must be certified. EPA 608 is required for refrigerant work but does not replace Connecticut's state license. Source: EPA Section 608 (https://www.epa.gov/section608/section-608-technician-certification).

Renewal and CE

1-year renewal cycle. S-1 and S-2 licensees must complete Board-approved continuing education annually; the Board publishes current CE hour rules. Verify current CE hours on the DCP page before renewal. Reciprocity

Connecticut reviews reciprocal licensing on a case-by-case basis through the Heating Contractor Equivalent Experience and Training path. Applicants licensed in another state should submit a license-verification letter. Union and Non-Union Pathway

Connecticut HVAC and mechanical apprenticeships run through UA-affiliated Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 676 and Local 777, Sheet Metal Workers Local 40 (New England), and non-union programs registered with ABC Connecticut and PHCC of Connecticut. CTECS trade high schools offer related coursework. Presented neutrally; verify current intake with each program.

S-1 Upgrade

To upgrade from S-2 to S-1, a Connecticut mechanical worker must hold the S-2 for at least 2 years (or have at least 6 years of equivalent experience and training) and pass the S-1 exam. The S-1 is the credential required to contract for heating, piping, and cooling work and pull permits.
