Experience and Training

Applicants for the Unlimited Mechanical Contractor examination must meet the same requirements as applicants for the unlimited journeyman examination with one additional year of experience (4 years total minimum). Journeyman applicants must be 18 years of age or older and must have three years of verifiable experience in the mechanical trade in the category for which they are applying, while employed by a licensed mechanical contractor. Education substitution is allowed against experience on a sliding scale (an associate's degree or 1,000+ classroom hours Committee-approved program may substitute for 2 years, 500 hours for 1 year, smaller totals proportionally). Military Crosswalk

Oklahoma accepts substantially equivalent military education, training, and experience toward licensure examination under OAC 158:50-9-1.1 and OAC 158:1-3-10.

Exam

The mechanical contractor examination includes a business and law portion and a trade portion. The maximum grade value on each part is 100 points and the passing score is 75% or more on each part. Source: OAC 158:50-9-1.

Bond and Insurance

A contractor must furnish a $5,000 corporate surety bond payable to the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board before license issuance. The bond is continuous with a 30-day cancellation notice. Proof of a general liability insurance policy of at least $50,000 is also required, and the Construction Industries Board must be added as a certificate holder. Source: OAC 158:50-5-3.

EPA Section 608

HVAC technicians who work on equipment containing regulated refrigerants must hold a valid EPA Section 608 Technician Certification under 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F. EPA certification is a federal requirement separate from state licensure and is not issued by the Oklahoma Construction Industries Board.

Reciprocity

Oklahoma recognizes mechanical reciprocity only where a written reciprocity agreement exists with the applicant's home state. Applicants without a reciprocity agreement may qualify for Exam Equivalency where the home state exam is pre-approved by the Committee and the applicant scored 70% or higher, is in good standing, and has no pending disciplinary matters.
