Scope of Work

A Washington General Elevator Mechanic license (Category 01, with allied Categories 02–04 and 08) authorizes an individual to perform installations, alterations, and repairs on elevators and related conveyances regulated by Washington State Department of Labor and Industries. Experience and Training

Three (3) years of work experience for the General/Category 01–03, 04, and 08 licenses; two (2) years for Category 06; one (1) year for Category 07. A separate Category 9 temporary license is also issued. Source: L&I licensing page.

Exam

No exam is required for graduates of registered apprenticeships or the National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP); other applicants must pass the Washington state examination. The Category 01 (General) exam is 160 randomly selected multiple-choice or true/false questions covering codes, installation, safety, and maintenance; specialty exams (Categories 02–08) are 100 to 150 multiple-choice questions. Application/license $277.60 ($92.20 application + $185.40 license); exam $278.40 if required; temporary Category 9 license $185.40.

Renewal

Initial license validity varies by birthdate; renewals are valid two (2) years.
