Elevator Mechanic

A New York State Elevator Mechanic license authorizes an individual to engage in elevator and conveyance work — design, construction, installation, maintenance, alteration, service, and repair of elevators and other conveyances, including accessibility lifts — and to represent oneself as an elevator mechanic. Experience and Training (choose one). (1) Active NAEC Certified Elevator Technician (CET) certification; (2) proof of work on elevator construction, maintenance, or repair under direct and immediate supervision in New York for not less than four (4) years immediately prior to January 1, 2022 (grandfather pathway); (3) completion of a state- or federally registered apprenticeship for Elevator Servicer Repairer; (4) completion of a nationally recognized training program (including NEIEP); or (5) equivalent municipal-program licensure approved by NYSDOL (e.g., NYC DOB private elevator inspector licenses are recognized as equivalent). Exam
NYSDOL does not administer a separate state examination; qualification is established via one of the pathways above.
Fees and Renewal
License fee is $100. Renewal cycle is every two (2) years. Source: NYSDOL.
Continuing Education
Initial licensees before August 1, 2023 had no CE required on first renewal. For licenses expiring after August 1, 2025, eight (8) contact hours (0.8 CEU) of NYSDOL-approved Elevator Mechanic courses are required annually for those not initially qualified via active NAEC certification.
