A Virginia Certified Elevator Mechanic credential authorizes an individual to construct, install, alter, service, repair, or maintain elevators, escalators, and related conveyances regulated by DPOR's Tradesman Program. Experience and Training (choose one). (1) Three (3) years of practical experience in the construction, maintenance, and service or repair of elevators, escalators, or related conveyances PLUS 144 hours of formal vocational training; additional experience may substitute for training at a 1-year-for-40-hours ratio (max 120 hours substitution); (2) three (3) years of hands-on experience PLUS completion of an equivalent elevator-mechanic training program approved by the board; or (3) completion of an approved registered apprenticeship through the Virginia Department of Workforce Development and Advancement or U.S. DOL Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training.
