8 hours every 3 years

Iowa HVAC/refrigeration and mechanical licenses renew on a 3-year cycle on a common PMSB schedule. For a single-discipline mechanical license, PMSB requires at least 8 hours of classroom instruction per 3-year cycle, distributed as 2 hours safety (Iowa Occupational Health and Safety), 2 hours mechanical code, and 4 hours in the current license discipline. Licensees who hold two separate, uncombined mechanical licenses (for example, HVAC-refrigeration and sheet metal) are required to complete 14 hours of CE per cycle. Up to half of the required hours may be completed through an approved online course. PMSB does not track CE centrally; licensees retain their own records and submit them with renewal. Separately, technicians handling regulated refrigerants must hold current EPA Section 608 certification under 40 CFR Part 82 Subpart F.
