Wisconsin does not issue a statewide HVAC technician license for individual workers. HVAC businesses operating in Wisconsin must hold DSPS HVAC Contractor Registration per Wis. Admin. Code SPS 305.70. The state also offers an optional HVAC Qualifier certification through DSPS; under Wis. Stat. section 101.178(3)(c), a business employing an HVAC Qualifier cannot be required to obtain separate municipal certification. Neither the HVAC Contractor Registration nor the HVAC Qualifier credential currently carries a published continuing education hour requirement. Renewal is procedural. Municipal rules still apply for scope not covered by the statewide registration; readers should confirm local permit and inspection rules with the city or county where the work is performed.

  • No statewide HVAC technician license exists; the optional DSPS HVAC Qualifier certification is issued via exam and experience review. See https://dsps.wi.gov/Pages/Professions/HVACQualifier/Default.aspx
